ARE SLICE OF LIFE ANIME BORING ?

As far as my own opinion is concerned , I have mentioned before that I have a soft spot for slice of life anime , so obviously I am against the statement that slice of life anime are boring
But today , I will keep an open mind and talk about reasons for which slice of life anime can be boring.

Before going into this , I just want to state that me having a soft spot for slice of life does not mean that I like every slice of life out there , there are always good shows and bad shows in a particular genre. Now that that's out of the way let's talk about why slice of life can be boring.

One of the major aspects that I look for in a slice of life is that , is the anime able to provide a sense of progression through its character development. To illustrate this point let's take two slice of life anime , Yama no Susume and Comic girls. Out of the two , Yama no Susume is much more appreciated because of its character development. In the anime with every mountain that the four characters climb , a new layer of character depth is added onto them , thus by the time you reach the end of a season you feel that the characters have grown a lot over the episodes and that gives you a sense of progression. Now let's compare that to comic girls , after watching some episodes of this anime , I never felt that the characters have gone through a substantial change , they were almost the same as they were in the first episode. Well , to be very honest I only watched the show up until the fifth episode and then dropped it , so now you guys might be thinking that , well maybe some character development did take place by the end of the show and yes , I totally agree with that but this point brings us to another reason why slice of life anime can be considered to be boring.

Some of these anime are not able to grasp the viewer's attention quickly , nowadays when like 50 anime come out every season , if an anime fails to grasp you within the first few episodes, you will obviously drop it as there are many more that might be worth your time. Thus in addition to character development , these anime need to do something in the first few episodes that show its viewers that there is a potential for further development in the future episodes. Unfortunately , in my opinion both Yama no Susume and Comic girls failed at that , so even if comic girls got good later on , I and many others were not around anymore to see that happen. But then why did Yama no Susume work , well that was because the insane amount of marketing they did for the second season but that's a topic for another day. There is actually an anime that nailed this aspect , Hyouka . Hyouka not only managed to give the viewers a sense of progression through its character development it also managed to grab the attention of the viewers in the first few episodes by introducing the deductive abilities of Oreki and also giving us a glimpse of the complexities in Satoshi's character . And therefore out of all the three anime discussed above , Hyouka was the most successful .

Now , there is also a third reason , that is if someone just doesn't like slice of life for the art style. To everyone of those I would just say that try and look past the artstyle and you might just find something that you enjoy.

In conclusion I would just say that yeah , slice of life can be boring but not all of them are , so I urge everyone to give them a try every now and then , who knows maybe you will find something that you enjoy.

MANGAKA SPOTLIGHT #1: TAISHI TSUTSUI

Today we will be taking a look at all the manga that Taishi Tsutsui has worked on , I will be talking about each one of them and comparing them as to showcase the journey that the mangaka has been through for the past decade. We will be starting with his first ever manga , Esprit. Esprit is a fantasy , action manga from Taishi Tsutsui , it is set in a world where numerous islands are called "homes" and people of a particular home have little to no knowledge about other homes. These homes are discovered and are kept in check by the agents of the "ocean affairs agency" , from here on I will be referring to these agents as OA agents (ocean affairs agents). These OA agents have certain powers called jinxes which stem from a person's faith. For example ,  if I believe with all my heart that I can cause weather changes then I will gain that power or jinx.
