Now that we have seen how big of a disaster the black clover anime was , I guess it's time to compare it to the manga which is actually considered to be good. Let's start off with the manga , the black clover manga came out shortly after My hero academia and it's slightly more rustic feel was appreciated by all , so when the anime adaptation was about to come out , it was marketed as the "new king of shounen". To be honest why wouldn't it be marketed like that , after all the manga was very well received , then why do people say that the anime is painfully generic and clichéd but no one raised this issue when they were reading the same story in the manga? The simple answer is pacing.
As far as the manga is concerned , the author was well aware of the painfully generic tropes that he was using in the first few chapters so he very cleverly made the manga fast paced , this allowed him to quickly set up the protagonist by using these generic tropes and by the time anyone would criticize it , the manga was already far ahead into the good stuff . Once the manga reached the good parts like introducing a number of different characters with their own powers , personalities and ideals , it slowed down a little and allowed the readers to explore these characters in depth. These new compelling characters mixed with a nicely advancing plotline ensured a good time for the readers. And for the record , by this I don't mean that the manga is perfect , it still has problems , there are still some clichéd stuff happening but whenever anything too generic takes place , it is glossed over quickly .
Now , as far as the anime is concerned , it royally messed up its pacing by introducing stupid filler flashbacks from episode one . Another notorious thing that it did was stick a three minute long backstory before every new episode . Think of the backstory episodes that One Piece has started now but from episode one. This meant that the show ended up spending too much time in covering the first few chapters. So in contrast to how the author quickly glossed over the weak parts as to make sure the readers remain engaged , the anime concentrated on these weak parts which immediately angered the viewers. This ridiculous pacing mixed with the god awful voice acting of Asta who is the main protagonist resulted in the black clover anime being a travesty.
The slow pacing also meant that a few jokes in the anime started to become annoying. Especially the ones which were not funny in the first place. For example , there is this running gag about Asta constantly asking the nun at the church to marry him. This joke was never funny, I hated it the moment it came up but I was fine as long as it was only mentioned once or twice but repeating it like 10 times in the first two episodes made me want to kill myself. The joke then started to become really uncomfortable and plain stupid. Another stupid thing about the anime is that it's interactions don't feel real , whenever the side characters open their mouths to utter some anime only dialogue you clearly get the feeling that this is not how real people talk but how stupid plot devices talk , this completely broke the immersion and the anime outright looked stupid.
Another thing that worked for the manga and not the anime was the artstyle , no one can argue the fact that Yūki Tabata has a pretty good sense of art , especially in the action sequences. The good artstyle mixed with clever pacing resulted in a good shounen manga which by no means is perfect but still good enough to give a try. To be fair to the anime , it has atleast fixed the issue of Asta's voice but I don't know if they fixed the pacing issue or not as I dropped the anime after a few episodes. If anyone out there was intrigued by the world of black clover and wants to explore more of it , it would be better to read the manga instead of watching the anime.
