ANIME DISCUSSION: OVERLORD

Today I will be briefly giving my opinions on the overlord franchise. I will talk about all the seasons separately and try to justify the amount of praise or hate that they received. Basically I  will just be talking about how I feel about the series as a whole.

Overlord is without a doubt one of the most popular anime in recent times , back when it's first season came out in 2015 , it instantly charmed its audience with incredible writing , brilliant character designs and arguably the best soundtrack in anime history. The way it presented it's story to the audience was very gripping and one of the main reasons why I feel that it stood out in a sea of isekai anime is that it's main protagonist felt very real and his character was believable. The protagonist was supposed to be an office worker in real life and the way he interacted in the fantasy world of overlord sold that point really well. Another great thing about the anime was it's unique style of world building and character development. The narrative constantly jumped from one character to another which resulted in drastic changes of the story arc. Each arc had its own characters and all of these arcs then combined to become part of the overall narrative. This allowed the anime to play around with a lot of different character designs, be it the goblins , lizard men , undeads or just plain humans. All of these aspects combined with some really good action sequences and voice acting made the first season a huge success.

But , the constant jumping around from character to character became much more prevalent in the second season and became one of the major weaknesses of the anime for a lot of people. During the second season , there was a constant complain from the fans of the show. A lot of them felt that the anime was not showing enough of Ains( the main character) but was focussing on other boring characters like the lizard men. And even though I really enjoyed the lizard men arc , I kind of understand the point of view of the people who were complaining. The main selling point of the first season for a lot of people was Ains and now that he was nowhere to be seen for almost the entirety of the second season , it was natural that a good amount of people started loosing interest in the anime. The second season was also much more character development and world building oriented , the action scenes were nowhere near the quality of the first season , thus the anime turned out to be painfully slow for a lot of people. For someone like me who lives for character development , overlord season two was a treat but even I have to admit that it was nowhere near the quality of the first.

Another point that I would like to make is that, for some reason the animations of the second season really did not feel all that good to me, I did not see any drastic improvements , and considering that it took them three years to come out with season two , I was really surprised to see such sub par quality of animation. In my opinion , season two although enjoyable , was nowhere near the level of greatness that season one achieved.

And now , we move to the third season , by the time of me writing this blog , overlord season three is five episodes in and already we are seeing a story arc not focussed on Ains and once again I feel that even without Ains , the arc feels so good and is really enjoyable. But once again , a lot of people have started complaining and the same pattern seems to be repeating. A lot of light novel readers have ensured that there will be a lot more of Ains in the future , so maybe the people who are complaining can rest easy but frankly the light novel readers have been saying this since the start of season two , so at this point I have no idea what is going to happen in the future episodes , all I know is that overlord is still pretty entertaining and enjoyable for me.

MANGAKA SPOTLIGHT #1: TAISHI TSUTSUI

Today we will be taking a look at all the manga that Taishi Tsutsui has worked on , I will be talking about each one of them and comparing them as to showcase the journey that the mangaka has been through for the past decade. We will be starting with his first ever manga , Esprit. Esprit is a fantasy , action manga from Taishi Tsutsui , it is set in a world where numerous islands are called "homes" and people of a particular home have little to no knowledge about other homes. These homes are discovered and are kept in check by the agents of the "ocean affairs agency" , from here on I will be referring to these agents as OA agents (ocean affairs agents). These OA agents have certain powers called jinxes which stem from a person's faith. For example ,  if I believe with all my heart that I can cause weather changes then I will gain that power or jinx. The story follows an apprentice OA agent Mio and her friends' adventures , as they explore these hom...

WEBTOON REVIEW: LET'S PLAY

Let's play is a romance , comedy webtoon from Mongie. It follows Sam , a socially awkward indie game developer. After her first ever game is poorly reviewed by a famous YouTuber , she starts receiving a lot of hate comments from the fans of the YouTuber which throws her life into a disarray. Further complications occur when that very YouTuber moves to her apartment and that too , the room next to hers. First and foremost , the webtoon is really well written. The author herself follows a lot of "let's play YouTubers" , so she knows how tough their job can be and manages to show this aspect really well. At the same time she , being in the creative field , also understands how hate comments can affect a creators life. This allows her to do justice to both sides of the coin and she is able to justify all the actions that each of these characters take. This strong writing mixed with some brilliant art ensures a great time for the readers. The webtoon also has a fa...
