ANIME REVIEW: SWEETNESS AND LIGHTNING

Sweetness and lightning is a slice of life anime from TMS Entertainment. It is an adaptation of a manga of the same name and is written and drawn by Gido Amagakure. It follows a teacher , Inuzuka who , after his wife's death has been taking care of his daughter Tsumugi on his own. As he is not good at cooking , he and Tsumugi usually eat packaged , ready made meals from the supermarket. A certain turn of events result in him visiting one of his student's restaurant. The student's parents have been divorced and as her mother is really busy with work , she tends to eat dinner at her place all by herself. After learning this , Inuzuka and Tsumugi start visiting her restaurant and cooking food together.

The anime is really enjoyable and gives a lot of "feel good" vibes , it has well executed animations along with some pretty good writing. The soundtrack is also really good and matches well with the setting. It is an absolute treat to watch , but only up until around episode five , after that the show starts becoming stale and somewhat boring. The good animations and writing are not able to make up for the poor character development and really slow progression. The show seems to have only one sole driving force which is how cute Tsumugi is. And Tsumugi's character is in fact really cute and charming but after a while that charm starts becoming stale and the show starts to become boring. By the end of it , I was left asking for more , the ending was nowhere near satisfying and was disappointing. The anime did not even try to focus on all of  its characters which in the end made a few of them feel really shallow which is not a good sign for a slice of life , as in a slice of life , the characters should be the main driving force. And I know that it was a manga adaptation and they did not adapt all the chapters , but I never have or will consider this fact as an excuse for an anime to be mediocre as a lot of anime in the past have been able to do well in a similar kind of situation.

Talking about the manga , it was much better than the anime. It was 54 chapters long and fleshed out its characters a lot more , this created more story depth and thus made it more enjoyable. But I do have a complain with the manga , I don't know if I am the only one who had this problem , but in a few panels Tsumugi's character looked flat out creepy and like something out of a horror movie , take a look at the page below and you will understand what I mean.

Other than this , the manga was a lot better than the anime , the primary reason for which is that it did not rely too much on Tsumugi's cuteness and provided some actually progression instead of boring its audience with the same thing over and over again. I would recommend everyone to atleast check out the manga and then , if you feel like it you can also give the anime a watch.

And now we are getting in the spoiler territory , so for anyone who has not watched the anime , I recommend you to skip this paragraph. Okay , here goes , I really did not like how the character of Kotori's mother was handled , when we are first introduced to her , her character seemed to have so much potential for future comedy , which might have been able to compensate for the boring plot progression but for some reason she only appeared in the final ten minutes of the last episode and even though she managed to lift my mood a little , the damage was already done.

MANGAKA SPOTLIGHT #1: TAISHI TSUTSUI

Today we will be taking a look at all the manga that Taishi Tsutsui has worked on , I will be talking about each one of them and comparing them as to showcase the journey that the mangaka has been through for the past decade. We will be starting with his first ever manga , Esprit. Esprit is a fantasy , action manga from Taishi Tsutsui , it is set in a world where numerous islands are called "homes" and people of a particular home have little to no knowledge about other homes. These homes are discovered and are kept in check by the agents of the "ocean affairs agency" , from here on I will be referring to these agents as OA agents (ocean affairs agents). These OA agents have certain powers called jinxes which stem from a person's faith. For example ,  if I believe with all my heart that I can cause weather changes then I will gain that power or jinx. The story follows an apprentice OA agent Mio and her friends' adventures , as they explore these hom
